Butterfly Valves form part of the quarter turn range of industrial and process valves, offering flow isolation, regulation and control of many liquids, gases and slurries within a pipeline. The closing mechanism of the Buttefly Valve takes place in the form of a centralised disc and inner body seal or seat, available in materials such as EPDM, Viton, Buna-Nitrile, PTFE, Silicon and even metal seated options depending on the applicaiton, pressure or temperature.


The Butterfly Valve disc itself is supported and mounted on a steel central rod or shaft, usually as a single or split piece construction and cetralised around the body and neck of the Butterfly Valve to the controlling lever, actuator or gearbox. It is this 90 degree rotation of the valve rod or shaft that postions the Butterfly Valve disc within the media flowpath, either in the opening or closed position through a clockwise or counter-clockwise movement.


Operation of Butterfly Valves is similar to that of the quarter turn Ball Valves offering quick and reliable shutoff. In more recent years the Butterfly Valve is becoming more popular amongst forward thinking engineers and manufacturers due to a rivalled perfomrance to that of general purpose Ball Valves but with added benefits including less body material, weight and supporting space taken within the pipeline. The benefits in turn provide lower valve material costs, installation and maintennance. For example, the installtion of a 10" Ball Valve would require the hiring or usage of specialist lifitng equipment and weigh close to 1000Kg, whereas the same specificiton of Butterfly Valve could weigh less than 20Kg and safely installed between several site contractors or engineers in a mucher short space of time.

Wafer Pattern Butterfly Valves are classed as a general prupose Butterfly Valve used as an economical and effective solution for many industries and applicaitons featuring a single piece bodied design with four centering guidance lugs for installation between pipeline flanges. Wafer Pattern Butterfly Valves take up minimal space within a pipeline where this may be a priority and provide easy, low maintenace use for both on and off or control.
